Hello Starmen.net!

I deliberated posting this on “The Big ‘What Are You Listening To?’ Topic”, but I thought I’d do something a little different here. I’m sure this isn’t the most creative or original idea for a thread, but it’s something I think would be fun.

I consider myself a fan of music. And not only Weezer, believe it or not! But I’ve found myself in a rut of listening to the same handful of albums these past few weeks… months… you get the idea. So, what I’d like you to do, is share an album with me (just one!). A long-standing personal favorite, something a friend recommended, a new album that’s in heavy rotation, whatever. If you can’t think of any albums, it could be a single song, but albums are preferred. Any genre, any artist, anything. Nothing is off-limits or too absurd. I will give everything a fair chance.

Over the next, say, couple of weeks—assuming I get a response—I’ll give whatever gets posted here a listen, and give my honest thoughts and feelings. If there are enough responses, and people willing, you’re free to do just as I’m doing! The goal is to find new music to listen to. And hey, I might even throw in a recommendation of my own!

Thanks for reading, and have at it!

this is incredibly tricky for me to pick just one of. you probably know the obvious choices for me. since we used to chat a lot about music in a different time. but i feel like if anyone should open this thread, it should be me, of course.

i think to avoid picking the obvious one, I’m going to choose Remember Sports’ Sunchokes

A recentish favorite of mine, it has the distinct honour of being an album I bought on CD within a day or two of listening to it (an honour it shares with only one other album, Noah Kahan’s Stick Season) I don’t think I could even begin to describe why this album resonated with me so hard. I think it was a case of coming at the right time? Or I think it’s just an album that is very much just a me album! I wouldn’t personally be offended if most of you who read this don’t resonate with this one as deeply as I do, but it feels like a nice way to shout this album out. It’s short and should be an easy warmup to this thread’s concept. Hopefully more people do this thread! I’d love to follow along and join Ripjaw in listening to your album selections!

A moth I am… not.

Had to give this a bit of thought, because there are so many good albums I like
But I have landed on one for you

I’m kind of in my goofy homestuck phase (lol), so I’ve been listening to a lot of music made in that community
Honestly if I had to recommend one album to you it would be the Vast Error album Faux Dramatica.
It’s actually just overall a fantastic collection of music that I think would to appeal to most big music listeners, even if they have zero interest in homestuck.

Anyways, sorry for being a nerd rn lol, hope you enjoy the album!

I’m going to go ahead and recommend Inabakumori’s album WEATHER STATION .

It’s vocaloid music. If you don’t know what that means, basically the vocals are taken from a voice bank and then essentially used like an instrument. It’s not for everyone, but I personally love it, and Inabakumori is my favourite vocaloid artist. You might recognize Lagtrain, which has become a bit of an internet meme due to its music video having lots of parodies made of it.

I hope you enjoy the album!

Without love, it cannot be seen.

Two replies! Joyous day! Thank you both, seriously. While the iron is hot, I’ll give you all my recommendation…

I Didn’t Mean To Haunt You by Quadeca.

Admittedly, the name is pretty blunt. It’s a concept album about a ghost. In truth, I’m not super sure about the contents of the story it’s trying to tell, but even strictly musically this project is great. This album was on my radar before I listened to it last year, so I took the liberty of giving it a shot… and, while I thought it was fine, it didn’t really click the first time around. But it has quickly shot up to my most listened to album ever (“ever” as in on Spotify, and according to Last.fm). People are saying the genre “art pop” or “folktronica” and things of that nature… but I don’t know what any of that means! All you need to know is that it’s got a sort of ghostly feel to it and it has some really powerful musical moments. Please give it a spin if that sounds cool!

Edit: Three replies! Thank you Rake.

It’s really hard picking just one album, but I feel like there really is only one that I would feel right recommending. A Thousand Suns by Linkin Park is probably the album that I’d say is the definitive Aither album in that for the longest time it was -and probably still is- one of my top albums and has a pretty long history in my life.

In terms of what it actually is: ATS is a concept album that LP made back in 2010 that is heavily experimental compared to the music they released beforehand. It’s very much a, “Listen to all the songs in a row without skipping,” album. I wouldn’t say it’s interconnected to the point of something like 2112, which I also debated recommending, but it really adds to the experience to go through it all at once. The album plays with themes that can be applied to wider concepts but also personal feelings. Conflicts and regret would be the easiest way to put it. It’s not a total downer, despite how that sounds. ^^;

In terms of genre…I have no darn clue how to describe it. It’s this grungy, electronic rock but it can flip on a dime to a different sound. Sometimes it feels cleaner, sometimes it gets very distorted, and it has some softer moments. …also has a lot of “transitional” songs, but I will say it’s good to not skip over them during a first run through of the album. They really do add to the experience as a whole, but I don’t blame people for not wanting to play through them after hearing them once.

They/It/Void | If you don’t take care to preserve your memories, you’ll forget them.

It’s hard to pick one album because later on tastes change and what you like now, you might hate later.

As of currently, my top favourite album is Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) by David Bowie from 1980

In my opinion, it’s the definitive Rock and New Wave album. At least for Bowie.

What is it? And opinion:

It’s a New Wave / Art Rock album made after the experimental Berlin Trilogy. It’s more commercial than Low, “Heroes”, and Lodger, but it features unique elements I fell in love with. Such as the synthesized guitars in the title track, and the most petty song I’ve heard in my life (Teenage Wildlife). and the interconnected It’s No Game (No. 1 & 2). It mocks what was popular at the time, which is very funny due to him making commercial albums for money for the rest of the ‘80s. The album has even been referenced in JoJo. There’s got to be a reason why songs off this album were played live for almost every tour he did afterwards.

If you like Low, “Heroes”, and / or Lodger than you might get a kick out of this one as well.

Personal favourite off this album is the title track, Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps).

The album I haven’t been able to stop listening to these past couple months that has quickly become one of my all-time favorites has to be Expert in a Dying Field by the Beths. Not a bad track on here imo. Special shout out to starmen.net user Dylan (Dielawn) (Bill) (billnukem) for the original recommendation, lol.

The genre is like female vocalist indie-rock/power pop. Might not be for everyone if your taste is less “basic” than mine, but it’s certainly kind of a shot straight down the middle for my music taste, lol. I feel like it’s not too far from weezer in the grand scheme of music.

My favorite album that I (hopefully) will never get tired of is Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum by Tally Hall. The variety, emotion, silliness, and seriousness in this album is incredible.

Alas, the band only has one other official album called Good and Evil, which lacks the variety from the first album. All the songs kind of sound samey. However, there is an unofficial third album, and I call it unofficial because it was produced by a different band that had many of the same members. That album is called Hawaii: Pt. 2 and it’s a masterpiece.

My favourite band is Whatever People Say I’m That’s What I’m Not by the Arctic Monkeys (2006)

It has some great tracks some of which I had played live with my band before, althought not all the songs are Astr the lowest is at most a B+, It is one of the best albums I have ever heard, I wish a deluxe version with B-Sides, live recording and demos existed of it one day. Hopefully before I am thirty. Me and my girlfriend enjoy listening to it when we go out. Betrayal considering my pfp is Weezer (Blue) Deluxe

Thanks to all of you for the new submissions! I’ve listened to a couple of your albums so far, and here are my thoughts:

Remember Sports – Sunchokes
This is just a fun indie rock album. The lead singer’s voice compliments the instrumentals to a T, honestly. She sounds very passionate. It’s probably very lame to say it reminds me of Weezer, (What, because there’s guitars? Come on now.) but it does in a way. Sort of Blue Album-esque, just catchy hooks and riffs and all that good stuff. It has a consistent sound the whole way through, which is certainly a strength, but it makes it difficult to pick a favorite track. If I had to choose, it would probably be “Clean Jeans”. Maybe I sympathize with being a lazy dude, I dunno. I think its biggest detriment honestly is that I wish it was longer, but I appreciate its digestible length. Album makes me a little sad though. Not sure why, really. I guess this album to me feels like “moving on”, which is certainly applicable to me, as I’m about to go through a pretty huge transition in my life. And I might be totally wrong about the themes here. But fun! I will definitely be returning.

Rom M – Faux Dramatica
This is very “meme-y” in the way something like SiIvaGunner is. It is littered with references from top to bottom. I feel as if a lot of it goes over my head because I don’t know very much about Homestuck, and I haven’t listened to any of the artist’s previous works. However, I think even not knowing much of what it was drawing from, it stands on its own musically. And the references that I did recognize were quite funny; notably, “Dustcatcher Redux” samples “Verified” by Your Favorite Martian, which was a very amusing surprise. But yeah, if reference humor is your thing, definitely check this out. I don’t want to say too much regarding it’s referential content, but there are certainly some stuff sprinkled in that die-hard internet denizens will recognize and appreciate. And it crams all of that into a surprisingly well-compiled package. Favorite song? Either “Naught” or “COGNITO HAZARD (Ft. Eddie Deezen)”. I was not expecting the vocal performance that “Naught” delivered out of quite literally nowhere, and the way the song concludes is pretty great. “COGNITO HAZARD” is probably the most loaded track on the album. It’s an EDM banger with silly sound effects and things interwoven throughout. Two very different ends of the musical spectrum. I will probably check this one out again soon.

Thank you both for your recommendations! I will keep listening to all of your albums in the coming days. Until next time

Sorry for the wait everyone. I’ve been on call with friends over the weekend finishing up some projects. The coming week should be a bit freer. Without further ado, here are my thoughts on the next two albums:

INABAKUMORI – ウェザーステーション (WEATHER STATION)
This is one I’ve listened to a few times at this point. I’d imagine the biggest hurdle that comes with working with a vocaloid is that it can be hard to make them sound emotive. I think the artist works around this by focusing more on the catchiness of each track. Now, I don’t know the language, so I can’t decipher the lyrics at all. The subject matter of these songs could be about quite literally anything. But my gravitation towards some of these songs despite a lack of comprehension is a testament to how infectious they are. The hooks on this album are pretty damn good pretty much the whole way through. And even STILL, it has an emotional weight to it that is told through the instrumentals. I’m not super crazy about the key changes, but that’s a pretty minor gripe in the grand scheme.

I thiiiiink my favorite is the 5th track, “ハルノ寂寞 (Haru no Sekibaku)”. I love the chorus on this one.

Linkin Park – A Thousand Suns
I’m so mixed on this album. Overall, I like the sound. It reeks of dystopia. The frontman’s voice reminds me of Rivers Cuomo’s at times. However, I don’t know how I feel about the social commentary. Maybe I’m just not big on the self-motivation stuff—it seems sorta preachy—but who’s fault is that but my own for seeing it that way, lol. Even on a second listen, I find myself noticing the same problems I noticed the first time. Lyrics are a big one; I feel as if they’re fairly same-y the whole time, as if the band is trying to say the same thing fifteen different times in fifteen different ways. Which is fine, but I just wish they’d touch on some different topics, because I think there’s a lot of lyrical potential that goes unused. On the instrumental side, this album does well in communicating what it wants to communicate. I can totally see how this is a project often returned to by many, but it might take a while for it to really click with me. I’ve really never listened to anything Linkin Park before, so maybe I’m just not adjusted yet. I’m willing to give it another chance sometime. Sorry for being such a Debbie Downer!

My favorite here might be “Blackout”. I think this is the first song on the album where the lead singer really lets out some full screams, and it’s matched with one of the most lighthearted instrumentals on the whole thing. It’s honestly a pretty interesting juxtaposition.

AAAAAAH!!!!
Did I scare you? Flawless segue.

David Bowie – Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)
As someone who, admittedly, never actively listened to Bowie, it’s easy to see why he’s considered to be such an influential figure in the music world. He has an often striking vocal delivery, especially on the first track. I do appreciate how this album’s first and last tracks are interconnected, I thought that was pretty cool. It’s surprising to see that even though this album played a part in Bowie’s attempt at going more “commercial”, it still has its own flare to it. I will say, I’m inherently biased against 80s music as a whole, because my dad is a fan. And by that, I mean he will sometimes just throw the speakers on and blast it in the house. And a pretty small house at that. Put some headphones on! Damn! Anyhow, I have a lot of respect for the pioneers of the time, but it’s pretty hard for me to get into the 80s pop/rock genre.

In terms of favorite song, I’m torn between “It’s No Game (Pt. 1)” and “Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)”. The title track is far and away the most memorable to me, but I like the screaming-singing thing Bowie has going on in the first song.

The Beths – Expert In A Dying Field
This album is nothing short of beautiful. It’s got a clean, fun sound and I love what the lead does with her vocals (she has a lovely voice). Great guitars too. Drums. The whole thing. Very euphoric. The album closes strongly; “2am” is rather emotionally charged! Through this album and Sunchokes, I think I’m discovering that I like indie rock quite a bit. Funnily enough, I don’t even, like, listen to alt/indie rock! It’s only Weezer, really! This is probably my favorite recommendation so far. I don’t have much else to say, but I see myself returning to this one in the near future.

The titular “Expert In A Dying Field” has gotta be my favorite song on here. The lead singer—Beth if you will—does some really cool melody stuff with her voice… UGH!! Earworm of a song. I know I’m always talking about choruses as if they’re the only part of a song, but this one is gorgeous. A little sad there’s only one Beth though :(

Join me… sometime… as I finish up the existing list of albums, assuming no one else has any recommendations. Feel free to shoot a recommendation this way if you haven’t! And again, thank you all for participating. I’ve found a lot of great stuff this past week or so!

If by the time I post again and no new recommendations have been submitted I will be inviting those who have already participated to send another album if they so wish :)

I recently listened to the album The Mollusk by Ween. There were actually a couple tracks that I didn’t like, but a few that I REALLY liked. Yesterday at work I couldn’t get the second track fittingly also named The Mollusk out of my head. I’d recommend giving it a listen.
