  • Mother Music Prompt - 1

Me and my friend were talking about music i talked about the mother/ Earthbound music being amazing. My friend than asked to check it out to see if what i was telling him was true. I showed him the finial boss music in Earthbound Porky Means Business (Cease To Exist) he hated it he said it needs lyrics to be good than we debated for a while i quit ahead before we start fighting physically. So what do you guys and girls think does a song need Lyrics to be good? I personally say no it doesn’t kind of like art you don’t need words telling you how to feel. Remember to respect everyone’s opinions we all think and act differently i don’t want to start a war here i just wanna know what you guys and gals think.

Actually, I much prefer a song without lyrics. I think the lyrics screw up the song and make it… eh.

But to hate any song merely for having no lyrics is pretty stupid honestly.

I kinda like to sing along to music, so lyrics are generally necessary. Though there are some excellent game scores that are beautiful without words.

How good something is can only be a matter of opinion. In my opinion, it really depends on the song. For example, songs like Because by The Beatles depend on lyrics, there wouldn’t be much of a song without them.

However, video game music is usually instrumental, and that has come to be expected. I feel like lyrics in game music would be distracting from the gameplay. So really, it just depends on what you feel. Personally, I usually enjoy music without lyrics more.

I like both, but for different reasons. If I want to focus on the music itself, I like to have lyrics, because they give me something extra to think about on top of the melody/structure. But if I want to play music while I’m trying to focus on something else (especially reading a book), I prefer music without lyrics because otherwise I get distracted by the words to the song. But I also sometimes just like to listen to instrumental music by itself, because it’s also nice in its own right.

As a bachelors student studying music at university the definitive answer is: No, music as a whole does not need lyrics to fit any standard definition of “good”.

Some of the earliest recorded (as in written down) music started as poetry, or in other words, as rhythmic prose that was set to primitive tablature type markings (later standardized into Neumes) . Later on as music evolved through the years, especially in western Europe, people starting writing more complex harmonies into their psalms and hymns, and eventually they figured out that you didn’t need to rely on something as explicit as text to convey an idea, an emotion, or even imagery. Crazy right?

Music has been evolving and changing for centuries, both in the instrumental and lyrical genres, so any preference of one over the other is just that; a personal preference that doesn’t reflect on the overall “goodness” of one style over the other. Some peeps like words with their tunes, some don’t, and most of us can appreciate both.

It depends. Smooth jazz can work brilliantly without words. However, a capella is nothing without lyrics.

Simple answer: No. Music with and without lyrics can be fantastic. Easy examples for instrumental include Scott Joplin and Vince Guaraldi. Easy examples for lyrical include The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and Billy Joel. The piano is perhaps the most beautiful of all, and most of these artists often utilize this or another rather powerful instrument.

Scott Joplin’s Pineapple Rag and Magnetic Rag are excellent examples of how a piano can be light and playful, and dark and demented.

Guaraldi is famous for the Peanuts score, but his songs are pretty and nostalgic nonetheless like in Cast Your Fate to the Wind and Peppermint Patty (Charlie Brown Suite version).

The Beatles are very diverse and interesting throughout their music, they’re my personal favorites. But I think that A Day in the Life and Let it Be pretty well capture it all, even their crazier side.

I felt the need to add Simon and Garfunkel to the timeline, their music is so powerfully mellow, due to their fantastic voices and harmonies. They tell rather sad and nostalgic tales, let them caress your ears with The Boxer and the Sound of Silence.

And then Billy Joel is very diverse too, just about every song of his has a different sound. Whether you’re under Pressure or feelin’ alright for the Piano Man, you’re in for a treat.

All of this music is great, and not because it has voice or doesn’t. It’s because each artist put a little soul and brilliance into each one, which is what someone should look for in music.

E: Added Simon and Garfunkel to the mix.

I don’t know why I like much rather instrumental music, I just do. I find it interesting that when I was a small child the only music I was exposed to was what my parents listened, and it was always music focused on lyrics, and yet even since then I had a much stronger preference for music without. I was born for instrumental.

I don’t really have an aversion to lyrics, it’s just that I don’t pay attention to them at all (not understand spoken English does not help), so if they are the only good thing about a song, this song will utterly suck for me. Singing for me is nothing more than gibberish that is supposed to go well with everything else. (Yes, I find the human voice to be the worst and most overrated “musical instrument”.) But that doesn’t prevent me from having Somebody That I Used to Know and Rather Be among my favorites.

I don’t care if someone plays an instrument well, if they can sing well or have a powerful voice, if they can write poetry, or anything else – all that matters for me is whether they are capable or not of making good tunes. Composing is where the true genius, originality and creativity of a musician shows, everything else is only secondary. I am musically illiterate, so that makes me all the more fascinated by the people who have mastered the most abstract of human arts.

My favorite musicians are amateur composers who make synthesized music. Many probably haven’t touched an instrument in years, one actually never had more than drum lessons once in life. I admire good composers – performers and lyricists, not at all.

I melted away one warm winter day. But I’ll always remain in your memory.

I like both, actually. I don’t think one is better than or a “step up” from the other – it’s just different.

Personally I find that I listen to songs with lyrics for the meaning as well as the sound, whereas I find that instrumental music helps to stimulate my imagination/work a bit better. In fact while drawing I prefer to listen to instrumental stuff to keep me focused. Stuff like Two Steps From Hell as well as the Skyrim soundtrack work really great for that.

I found a pretty neat fantasy music compilation on YouTube as well as a Celtic music one, but I’ve yet to listen to the latter in full – I’ll probably do that tonight while finishing up my drawing for tonight.

It really does depend. Some music with lyrics could be great, but are trashed because of how crap the lyrics are. This applies to the glam rock genre pretty badly. Pink Floyd’s The Wall would be lost without the words, no matter how rockin’ the other music is too. It tells an amazing (yet incredibly sad and depressing) tale that could not be experienced the same without music. The Wall is one of my all time favorite albums of music ever just because of how great all the music was while also giving food for thought. Just brilliant.

The presence or absence of lyrics is a non-issue for music. At least as much as the presence or absence of any other part of any music. If a piece is composed with lyrics in mind, of course the song is bound to fall flat when that portion is missing. If the lyrics are of terrible quality, they will detract from the rest of the music when they’re shoehorned in.

The really important factor for getting good music together is for everything to be put together with a clear intent in mind with a performance that can respect that intent in earnest.

I generally prefer with vocals, but there are some pretty song exceptions to that. Progressive and/or post rock both work perfectly well without vocals, as does anything intended to be non-distracting background music (for me this includes some folk, electronic, classical, big band, etc). Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Explosions in the Sky come to mind as some of my favorite instrumental bands.

But the problem for me is that I listen mostly to metal, and instrumental metal is frankly boring for me. Metal bands tend to do one of two things when they decide to be instrumental:
-Use this as an excuse to write wanky lead guitar that noodles through the whole song, managing to be technically impressive yet otherwise totally unmemorable.
-Not change anything. They play the same handful of riffs for 4 minutes and the song becomes boring.

I don’t mind either (my favourite music is Disney/Musical and VGM) but I find in most modern pop songs the lyrics are awful and don’t make any sense – it kind of ruins the whole song.
