I’m not sure if this really warrants its own thread. Instead of outrighting locking like as I had just considered, I’ll concur with you a bit and say that we should be wary of developing parasocial relationships with strangers we follow on the internet. We never truly know any of these YouTubers. “Don’t meet your heros”, is what they say.

Ya know what I’d like to do? A series of videos called “Is your favorite creator a horrible person” where I go through popular creators on various platforms, dig up as much dirt as I possibly can and rate them on a scale of how scummy they are so that others can know how good or bad a creator is without doing the digging themselves.

Like I highly HIGHLY doubt that Arlo is running some secret human trafficking ring. But I haven’t dug into his personal dirt so I would have no idea!

I’ve done some digging on a few youtubers. A lot of the big names have little dedicated hater communities! The funniest one to me is the Cinemassacre/AVGN one. James Rolfe doesn’t really… do anything. But he has an entire little anti-fandom of criticizers.

Now, there are things to criticize about AVGN, especially after Screenwave jumped in, but this reddit community mostly just complains about James Rolfe’s hairline of all things. Like, that isn’t fair, man lol. That’s a good sign, though. When a community dedicated to dig up dirt on you can only come up with criticisms of the show and its production, or (unfairly) the appearances of the crew? Screenwave sucks though. They suck.

I’m sure at least some of you are aware of The Completionist “drama”, for lack of a better word, where it’s alleged that he knowingly committed charity fraud through a charitable organization he runs (ran? I’m not sure). I haven’t been keeping tabs with the whole thing, nor do I know very much about it to begin with. I’ve practically never even watched his stuff.

But, after the allegations came out, he went back to posting videos again after approximately a week. Which is not very long at all. So now every time he posts a video, let’s say for example, a Lies of P video, all the comments are things like “The only LIES are the ones you told your viewers. Still in shock”. Or even a “Top 10 Switch Games of 2024” video, someone will say like “This video reminds me of the switch you pulled on your viewers”. Things like that. Which to me is very funny and it’s been an inside joke between a couple friends and I as of late.

The one that affected me the most (in terms of youtubers at least) was probably the Channel Awesome controversy. I was a huge HUGE fan of Doug Walker. Like, legit looked up to him as a critic believe it or not.

JonTron was my big one. He was my favourite youtuber when I was in high school. His style of humour definitely influenced my own, but honestly there are probably only fragments left in that, these days. My best friend and I used to watch his videos, early era Game Grumps, we’d quote and mimic his mannerisms. We’d even draw and doodle Game Grumps stuff in art class, haha.

And then one day it turned out Jon was a little racist, xenophobic rodent with poor argument skills. It still bums me out a bit to think about. Even if none of that controversy were to ever happen, though, I still don’t personally vibe with the changes his channel had been through. Much prefer the old, gamer Jon. But what is matter, I’m not going out of my way to watch his stuff anymore. I’m only human, so I have to admit I’ve rewatched a few old videos for old time’s sake, but I’d rather not support him if I can. Just want to be honest. That said, if I were blissfully ignorant on the subject, if I didn’t know any better, I’d still take 2012 Game Grumps over anything past that anyday. They became so… I don’t know. Sell-out-ish?

Don’t meet your heroes, folks!

edit: I never cared for Nostalgia Critic. It just wasn’t really my style. But I’ll admit something much, much worse – I actively enjoy CinemaSins. The most hated channel in its category. (I say category because I know I’ll get flack for labeling it as either review or comedy!)

edit no. 2: The fact any of these guys are still making videos and have successful fanbases goes to show that cancel culture isn’t really real!

“I won’t accept the ban from anyone but my true love Jordan Keller.”

Weirdly enough, I’m a pomegranate.

Art can be enjoyed separate from the artist. Also, putting something that someone said in their teens on display is just… bad. I remember a thing of people trying to cancel CaveTown because they found the Twitter account he used as a teen and it was like…wildly antisemitic. He then grew up, became a better person, and tried to forget about that era of his life. But then someone dug it up and showed it to the world on TikTok. People were crowding him left and right despite the fact that he didn’t believe any of those things anymore.

Moral of the story: Feel free to dig up stuff on your own, but definitely think of the human being you’re putting into the spotlight when you publish that stuff.

I agree with all of that. As for the first note, I’ll concur that art can definitely be seperated from artist, yes. But it’s a very nuanced subject that comes down to personal feelings and ideology. I don’t think it’s wrong, personally, to enjoy something made by a rotten person. But I would never give any flack to somebody who chooses not to seperate art from artist. Afterall, supporting a scumbag is still supporting a scumbag.

I definitely don’t think it’s right to dig up something from somebody’s past to use against them, especially if that something was from they were a teenager. We, as human beings, can change a lot between adolescence and adulthood. Or adulthood to slightly later adulthood. And people can always change for the better. I typically would never hold something so old against somebody, unless that somebody has showed zero instance of change. So I do think it can be beneficial to find an old, bad post from years ago to see if the content creator still holds onto those beliefs. Jontron, for instance, hasn’t gone on record to rescind the bigotry he claimed roughly a decade ago. So I would still hold that against him.

There’s also another layer for people getting canceled for things that aren’t even problematic. Matpat making gibberish sounds and one kinda sounded like the n-word, Will Wood’s “cry like a baby with autism strapped to a ceiling fan” lyric (I have autism 1 and most of my friends are autistic too. We all love that line and I have never met a single person to find that offensive), or, as much as I dislike Taylor Swift’s music, canceling her for not getting involved in a political movement is so dumb. The whole idea of deeming people problematic or canceled feels off, unless it’s someone like JK Rowling who has ADMITTED to inspiring the goblins off of Jews. She has room to grow, as all people do. Hell, even Kanye’s getting better when it comes to antisemitism (though, his reasons may be a bit…odd). But that’s an actual example of someone who I will agree is okay to be publicly known as problematic. She said those things publicly and takes pride in them.

Taking this chance to plug my statement on ‘separating the art from the artist’: a bad person can make a masterpiece, and I would probably still encourage you to enjoy that masterpiece. But if that bad person is trying to use the profits from their masterpiece to hurt others, or is trying to use the masterpiece as a way to get a platform for spreading hate, you can still enjoy the art, you just don’t support the artist in the process. You all know what I’m referring to.

Best example is with J.K. Rowling. -- human being, but if you really like Harry Potter, I’m not going to tell you not to play Hogwarts Legacy. I’m just going to tell you not to buy it, obtain it in a different way.

Weirdly enough, I’m a pomegranate.

Well, with Hogwarts Legacy specifically, the game itself has problematic content.

Plus a Jerusalem Post Article Covering It
tl;dr, the article talks about how having the greedy jew goblins being the ones to kidnap children enforces antisemitic conspiracy theories and Blood Libel crap.

Hogwarts Legacy might be a great game otherwise, idk, haven’t pirated it. But as a Jew I find it hard to engage in really any Wizarding World media comfortably. Besides fanfics, fanfics address the conflict great. Props to fanfiction.

I think better examples of loud antisemites who keeps that out of their art are Kanye West, HP Lovecraft, Pink Floyd, Roal Dahl (though I do have my thoughts on the character of Willy Wonka, I don’t think it’s half as bad as the goblins), and pre-apology CaveTown (bro’s cool now, he was just an -- as a teenager, as people tend to be). JK Rowling is too much of an idiot to leave her bigotry out of her work.

This also doesn’t just apply to antisemitism, obviously. It’s just a topic that I personally feel like I get a say in. Take the movie Peter Pan. That -- has a whole CONTINENT of problems. The portrayal of indigenous North Americans being nothing but barbarians who do drugs is… definitely something. Not only that, but Peter Pan takes failing the Bechdel Test as a challenge. The second Wendy appears, every single woman and girl in the movie is instantly jealous of her and tries to MURDER HER because they see her as competition. Also Wendy herself is a motherly figure to every fricking boy in the movie. All in all, lots of problems. When someone doesn’t want to watch Peter Pan out of discomfort, it’s not “oh Walt Disney made a self-insert who had a Hitler moustache and was a bad person”, but rather “this movie itself is so insanely problematic I don’t want to feed this content to my eyes”. KISS is an outwardly transphobic band but none of their songs are saying “Hey if there’s a girl who used to be a boy, kill him!” or something. So pirating their stuff is fine. I personally love their music.

Hopefully this analysis made sense and can be useful. It might just sound like rambling, which, in part, it is, but I believe that there is a method to separating art from artists that should be shared with the world.

I live on comedy.

One day I’ll probably die from too much of it.

Except JK Rowling is actively using her platform to push back human rights and sees any consumption of her work, even piracy, as endorsement.

This isn’t a case of, “oh, I disagree with their views but I still love their art”; this is supporting someone who not only exposes transphobia, but also directly funds and associates with far-right, “anti-woke” groups. Hell, she even supported an antisemitic YTber (Magdalen Burns) that spread conspiracy theories about “Jewish millionaires funding the trans cabal”. Even HP fans have harassed and doxxed trans people online.

I inherently side-eye any HP these days because of her transphobia.

Exactly, yeah. And the media itself enforces her beliefs, not just her platform. We’ve seen her make money-loving Jewish characters, nerdy and backstabbing ambiguously east Asian characters (forget ethnicity. Cho Chang is a Korean first name with a Mandarin surname iirc. She might go back and say Cho’s bi-ethnic or something, but looks to me like she just didn’t really care), an ambiguous-ethnicity Black character named --ing Kingsley Shacklebolt, etc. God knows what would’ve happened if she knew trans people existed when she wrote the books. It goes beyond what she supports (both with and without regard to her work), but also what said work says about groups of people.
