How do you feel about this show? If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s on Netflix right now. I love Bill Nye (though he is no Neil deGrasse Tyson), so I am honestly a huge fan of this show.

Oh my word I actually thought you were being serious. That piece of hot garbage, I mean, show, is literally the WORST thing I have ever watched in my ENTIRE life. And I do NOT say that lightly.

Man I loved Bill Nye when we watched his Science Guy show in school. And outside of that I haven’t really known him as much other than still a neat science dude.

But what the -- is this bullcrap.

First off, I’d like to point out that the video that has been linked here gave me several layers of aids. And I think it’s super funny how many dislikes it has. Second, you’re a goof, maxen. Third, I was planning on eventually watching this show, but I can already tell it’d be nothing but a waste of time.

I’m not gonna lie, other than the Rachel Bloom sections I happened to enjoy it. His panels pretty often seem to only show one side of a debate (with exception to having an astrologist on one time), but I enjoy the way that he tries to use methods other than lecture to explain science. Ultimately that’s what matters to me.

That said, Bill Nye did definitely use this show as a way of swooping into issues that irritated him, smashing it to bits with a science hammer and saying “Can we be done?”. I wouldn’t call it an “unrelenting bias steamroller” as much as I would call it “Bill gets sick of the fact these important scientific topics have political pushback”. When he showcases examples of global warming, sexual sciences, the usefulness of gaming (which IS an episode, mind you!), he’s trying to show demonstratable evidence pointing to it so that we can get on with our days.

I rambled on for a bit, but my Tl;Dr is this: Is this show meant to ruffle feathers? Probably. Did I enjoy it? Heck yeah I did.

I keep planning to check it out. I grew up on Bill Nye the Science Guy, Nova, Beyond 2000, and Beakman’s World, so it’s gonna be something of a revisit to my childhood. While i don’t like the “I F***ing Love Science” trend, i appreciate that there’s attention being paid to making sure we continue to fund it in the face of rampant anti-intellectualism.

Okay then, I’ll explain a bit just why I hated this show so much. (The dreadful Rachel Bloom ‘performance’ GOES WITHOUT SAYING.)

This Bill Nye isn’t the fun, goofy uncle type I grew up watching. He’s angry, preachy, and so… awkward. All his attempts at appealing to the Uber hip millenials made me cringe out of my skin.

But I think it’s the overall tone of this show that just grinds my gears so much. I frankly just felt talked down to and yelled at the whole time. His original series had a welcoming, fun feel. To say this show doesn’t is a massive understatement.

If any of you enjoy it, that’s fine. For me, it was unbearable.

      Have a nice day!

As many people have said, this show is quite appalling, and you can even agree to his overall message and still dislike it, as people on this thread has shown. Like, honestly, this is an example of what not to do to get your point across. Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean you can’t be overall engaging. If he did it the way he did when he was doing the show we were shown as kids, then many more people would probably be convinced. Like, doing something engaging to kids would be a better way of getting people to listen to your point.

I’m not gonna say whether or not I overall agree with him or not to avoid conflict with either side, but I will say that liberalism has gotten way too far, and you don’t even have to be right wing to realize that. Also, if this is made to protest Donald Trump, this is a terrible way of doing so, maybe lower than Antifa (who aren’t actually anti fascists and basically participate in similar behavior as fascists overall do).

In truth, I think we can almost all agree that this is terrible, and there are much better ways of Bill Nye conveying his point, even if it takes him being child friendly again like he was in his first show.

First off, I’d like to point out that the video that has been linked here gave me several layers of aids.

Can we, as a collective Internet, stop referring to things we don’t like as life threatening diseases? It’s sort of gauche.

I like what I’ve seen of the show so far. It’s definitely got its low moments (see video in original post, other similar skits) but on the whole it serves its purpose of showcasing scientific facts regarding present-day controversies. Bill Nye is presenting the point of view of someone who is completely exhausted with known facts being shouted down by beliefs, greed, and the desire to maintain the status quo.

The show could definitely use a little more guidance with the overall presentation, but it certainly isn’t bad.

This show does seem a bit more “political” than its predecessor but… so what? I like it. Is there really a problem with him talking about his opinions on his show? The title does not mention science at all, so I see no reason for people to expect all science. Some of the things on this show are science/scientifically proven but then you’ve got people going on and on about how it’s just “pleasant individual bullcrap”.

(Also, it seems there’s a filter changing “S J W” to “pleasant individual”. Whoever put this in, I love you)

Idk how this show shows that “liberalism has gone too far” as mentioned earlier. This guy has his platform and he’s using it. The many, many alt right channels on YouTube for example are using their platform. I see complaining on one, but not the other.

Also saying this is a just a level lower than the anti-fa is a bit of an overstatement. Anti-fa is hella violent

I dunno. I watched the first episode and I thought it was okay. I mean, Bill Nye the Science Guy hasn’t aged all that well either. I mean, if you go back and watch them, they’re pretty much just three science facts with a bunch of different ways to say the same facts over and over again. This one, at the very least, seems like it’s more on topic and less repetitious.

But, then again, I’ve been following Bill Nye outside of the “Science Guy” show for a while so maybe it wasn’t so jarring for me to go from a cheesy kids science show a (at times cringeworthily) cheesy adults science show.

Zach Braff also has not aged well since Scrubs… Like… Wow…

I’m going to watch this show when I find a time when I’m up to it. The music number that they’re throwing around seemed obvious to me as a concession by Bill that he doesn’t know how to appeal to youth best and that it’s not his place to tell people in the LGBTQ community what is “cringy” or not. It’s really unfortunate but it’s clear to me he wasn’t personally entertained by it, but rather that it’s something that matters to him so he chose to include that bit in order to be inclusive.

To anyone who is talking about Bill’s biases:

The premise of the show is that it’s a platform for him to attack (conservative) anti-science movements. That was the idea. If you don’t like it, you’re wrong.

You completely overexaggerated. You compared a guy with a show talking about science and trying to make a point about the failings of our government to a bunch of violent protesters. They are not even close to the same thing, and to compare them in any way besides the obvious “they don’t like the current administration very much” is, at best, ignorant.

I guess you’re right. Whatever. Back on topic, I may give this show a try if I have absolutely nothing to do and I have watched everything I wanted to watch and I have practiced my instruments and I’m sitting down doing nothing over the summer. The point is, I’d give it a try but if I dont like it then it would be a waste of time.

If this was a work designed specifically to be entertainment, this statement would be correct, albeit not worth typing. It just so happens though that it’s primarily meant to be educational, which means that not liking it is irrelevant.

He got the message. He’s allowed to not like the show. He’s allowed to post about in in the topic where the OP talked about how bad the show is.

That being said, Ninten The Metalhead, I’m going to say what I think legotrekker TRIED to say, just in a blunt manner – perhaps you should actually watch something before you judge it. I don’t really care if you dislike something without a good reason, but if you’re going to try to tell us things about the show when you’ve clearly never seen an episode, you ARE going to get called out on it, as you rightly should. That’s why I went and watched the first episode. I never cared about Bill Nye the Science Guy growing up, so I was pretty sure I was not going to care about this, but I wasn’t expecting it to be just devoid of anything I like.

As for why I didn’t like the show – Getting Zach Braff on stage and screaming about climate change is not going to teach anyone who doesn’t already believe in climate change (sidenote: it’s 2017, how do these people even still exist), and was just obnoxious to me. I was most interested in the scientists talking, and was REALLY annoyed everytime that Bill made a really unfunny joke over them. And I didn’t think the segments were funny or interesting or even really all that educational.

Does it get any better than the first episode? Because between that and the horrendus Rachel Bloom segment above, I’m pretty confident in skipping the rest of this.

^It exists because of how facts, especially scientific facts, are treated in the US.

The US thinks of science as a competing religion. Many take their religion as fact, and accept that there are a lot of other religions that oppose those facts. To them, Science is the religion of the atheist. Most don’t understand the scientific process, how a hypothesis becomes a theory, or even what a theory is in a scientific setting. To them, scientists telling everyone that climate change is irrevocably changing our planet isn’t all that different than the guy on the street corner screaming about the rapture and handing out pamphlets. And this is because we don’t teach science properly in our school system. For the most part, we teach pop science. Cool things that we’ve achieved because of science, but without actually explaining how one came to those conclusions. When we do teach real science, we feel like we have to tiptoe around the religion question, which is ridiculous, because religion and science don’t have to be diametrically opposed. But, since we teach a lot about how America was founded on the concept of religious freedom, many people dig in their heels against getting “converted” to science, because it’s their ‘ligion, dammit! Then we get politicians who pander to those people and making it seem like their personal religious freedoms are under attack by the atheist religion of science. They get support from their followers and in turn seem legitimized because _they have so many people following them and they’re on TV, so they must be right!_

It makes me shake my head.

From what I saw of the first episode, I just kinda figured this was a soapbox for Bill so he can rant about things he’s passionate about. If he’s legitimately trying to convince people who don’t already agree with him, then he’s going about it COMPLETELY wrong. If you’re going to try and convince someone of something they’ve been resisting, you need empathize, to pander to them. Make them feel like you’re on their side and THEN try and help them see. If they feel like you’re telling them their ideas are stupid, or if they feel you’re treating them stupid, then they’re going to get defensive and dig their heels in even more. The only times I’ve EVER changed anyone’s mind was when I was saying “I see why you’d believe that, and it does make some sense, but look at it this way”.

That said, my Father-in-law is one of those people Rabid mentioned who thinks science is pushing god out of the USA, but I would NEVER show him this in an attempt to change his mind.

If you want a show that shows that science is more than just sucking all the magic out of the world, something like Cosmos would be more of a step in the right direction imo.

Going off of what other people have said, religion and science are not at odds. You can be super religious and be super scientific. Science is a tool we use to understand and use the universe to our advantage, it does not belong on the same category as religion, which is used to try and answer a deeper meaning behind existence and life. The two are tools designed to open two different things using science to try to answer questions like the meaning behind human existence is like using a box cutter to open a lock, and using religion to try to advance an understanding of the laws of the universe is like using a house key to try to unlock a computer. The two exist to serve two different purposes.

I used to like watching Bill Nye as a kid which is weird because I don’t think I ever really liked science in general (especially not now).

I like the scientific method, though a lot of minutiae of a lot of sciences bores me to death. Bill Nye tried to teach people how scientists arrived at the current leading theories in a wide variety of fields using repetition, visual aids and gags, and easy to perform experiments for children.

Let’s all be honest, though, a lot of us correlate Bill Nye to “getting to watch a video in class”.
