So for some strange reason, even with diminishing returns from the past couple of years, I’m back with this again. You’re probably wondering, “how does this work?” Or, if you’ve been here the past couple times, you’re definitely wondering, “where’s the big huge table with all the different categories?” This year, you’re going to have to unlock them! Here’s how it works.

Rules

  1. To make a nomination, just make a post to this thread that consists of the following:
    • The name of the game.
    • The award category you are nominating the game for.
    • A substantial reasoning as to why you think the game qualifies for the nomination.
      • It doesn’t have to be super long or detailed or anything. Just make it look like you’ve put some thought into it. Think more “why I like this thing” than “this thing is good”.
  2. For most categories, eligible games are ones that were released between December 1, 2019 and November 30, 2020. Games currently only out in Japan or China may not be eligible if there is a planned western release for 2021 or later (on a case-by-case basis). For multiplatform games, the earliest release date is used.
  3. You can nominate a game for one category in each category group. The groups are:
    • Game of the Year
    • Presentation (How games look, sound, and feel)
    • Aspects of the Industry (To shed light on stuff that wouldn’t qualify for “Game of the Year”)
    • Looking Back, Looking Ahead (To compare what we thought would happen and what actually happened)
    • Around the Site (Things pertaining to our site in particular. Will be the hardest to unlock!)
    • Legacy Awards (Giving awards to past games to make you feel old. Now featuring a category for games that came out 40 years ago!)
  4. The next category will unlock after every three nominations.
  5. It’s okay to nominate for a category that already has three nominations! In fact, you can make multiple nominations in a single post!
  6. The nomination period will last from today, November 30, 2020, until the end of Sunday, January 3rd 10th, 2021. After which we will enter a voting period from Monday, January 5 11 to Wednesday, January 13 20 (subject to change). You will be voting on only the unlocked categories.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s start with our first unlocked category!

Best Non-Nintendo AAA Game

This category exists mostly because this website likes Nintendo games. So if there’s a game that wasn’t made by Nintendo but also not an indie game, nominate it for this category! You can also nominate games that have already been nominated for Game of the Year. There’s a chance that a game this year might win both!

Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome back BlueDraco. Nice to see you mate, where have you been? We’ve missed you!
Secondly here come my picks;

Legacy Category (15 years)- Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! While certainly rough around the edges and lacking any kind of fan translation (or an ability to skip the opening storyboards) it certainly maintains a quirky charm that somehow still holds up today. A necessary piece to add to any lover of the DS era’s collection.

Most promising ROM hack (EarthBound)- MOTHER 2 Deluxe. The vast amount of quality of lie changes that have been made in the last year have certainly made it difficult to return to playing the base game. messianic has truly moved heaven and earth for his magnum opus and deserves all the recognition he can get.

Most Promising Game Made By A Forum Member- Rhyselinn’s “Nuclear Springtime” . A post-apocalyptic farming simulator with a heavy emphasis on story? Sign me up!

Nicest Surprise- (Controversial pick considering the countless number of dead people) The Pandemic. To be honest being stuck inside most of this last year has brought with it some of the best days of my life; I’ve reconnected with my aunt and uncle and my best friend, My Mum has finally trusted me with the use of a PC at all times and a bunch of other responsibilities with makes me feel more grown up than ever, I’m on top of my college work (I’m actually ahead of the class in fact) and plans have been set in motion for me to move out into my own flat at 18! BEST HUMANITARIAN CRISIS EVER!

The Casey Bat (Awarded to the forum’s best baseball player)- Drake Inferno for beating He Who Shall Not Be Named at America’s pastime. TWICE!

The Smirnoff for the forum’s best comedian- The Lost Brood for this: https://forum.starmen.net/forum/General/Discussion/The-Big-General-How-Art-Thou-Faring-Topic/2271198

The Tony for the grrrrrrrreatest opening post- Jenifergates3 for starting the tea thread (https://forum.starmen.net/forum/General/Discussion/What-s-your-favorite-kind-of-tea/page/1#post2271097) And yes, I am nominating a bot; but you have to remember this bot sure created one hot topic! Hahahaha!

The Riddler for the best riddlemaster- Panadopolis for upholding our sacred ritual when no-one else could be arsed.

The Mario Bros. Award for the best thing done as a pair- J-Spade and Broomweed for creating the forum spy webhook for the discord. Have you seen that thing? It knows man, it knows!

Weirdly enough, I’m a pomegranate.

Centipede!

I dunno how long that game’s been out, and I still love it. I wasn’t born when it was first released, but it’s still fun, and I’ve gotten a a city-wide record (fourth place, not the best) for it once as a kid where I live.

As for “game of the year”, I’ll have to say…

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

My favorite game to come out THIS year, probably. I play a lot of older games, but this one is much more relaxing, and newer.

I live on comedy.

One day I’ll probably die from too much of it.

Thank you! What I realized that I should have done is have one category from each group unlocked, so as a treat here are three more categories!

Sights – Best Graphical or Visual Art Direction

Did a particular game catch your eye this year from how pretty it looked? Did a game absolutely nail the low-poly or pixel art look it was going for? This category is for games with impressive eye candy, no matter its polygon count.

    Most Anticipated Upcoming Game

A lot of you didn’t really play many games this year, but perhaps you’re looking forward to a game that’s coming out next year or later! This is the category for that.

Legacy 40 – Game of the Year 1980

That’s right, 1980 was 40 years ago. Feel old yet? Take a look back at 1980 in video games, when the arcade still ruled the scene and home consoles and consumer-grade computers were still a small part of the market.

… And with Pio’s retroactive nomination of Centipede for Legacy 40, we’ve unlocked another category!

Best DLC, Update, Expansion, or Ongoing Game

Games in this category may have not come out this year, but parts of it have! Does the expansion improve on its source game to the point where it’s considered necessary for the experience? Is it just a really good online game with really good continued support? Talk about it here! This year, I’ve added “Ongoing Game” to the title for parity with the Game Awards.

Well Pio, I see your centipede and I raise you a Pac-Man. I remember playing this game on the GBA quite a bit when I was a toddler (it was the pac-man collection which featured the original game so it still counts) and I have quite the fond memories of it. The simple yet engaging game-play was a sight to behold and it kept me coming back time after time.

My nomination for most anticipated game is…

    Splatoon 3

I’m tired of watching videos saying things like “It’s coming next year because Nintendo posted this random image on Twitter!”

As for the best Visual thingy, though it didn’t come out this year…

    Kirby Star Allies!

Though it came out a few years back, this game is BEAUTIFUL. My eyes were just addicted to the graphics in the opening cutscene. It amazed me then, and still does. That’s why I’m nominating it.

    I live on comedy.

One day I’ll probably die from too much of it.

Hey, I was totally going to do this! I second this 100%.

Also going to go ahead and nominate Super Smash Bros Ultimate for Best DLC, Update, Expansion, or Ongoing Game, for obvious reasons. Every new character that gets added creates so much hype and adds something new to the game, especially with the most recent addition, Steve, who required an update for every single stage in the game.

I’m not going to accept rumors for Most Anticipated Game. If it’s not announced, it’s not happening. Also I am very strict on the date requirement. It has to be from this year (well, December to November) unless the category says otherwise.

      Most Anticipated Upcoming Game:
      Cyberpunk 2077 (Releasing on 12/10/2020)
I believe this game is qualified for this category because people have been waiting since 2012 for this game. It has been delayed numerous times. Also I love the cyberpunk genre.

Vid or Giygas999, could you defend your nomination for Like a Dragon?

I want to put Yakuza: Like a Dragon on the board because it’s a game that serves underrepresented members of the community without just being trauma porn. Your main character is a middle-aged man who just re-entered the world after spending the last eighteen years in prison, and suddenly has to come to terms with the technological and societal leaps we’ve made in that time. Ichiban (the main character) isn’t a grizzled gangster out to get vengeance, he’s just a normal dude who’s trying to get by (who also happens to want to be a Hero, just like in Dragon Quest…). It’s a game that treats houseless people and sex workers with respect and agency, instead of just being window dressing on the edge of someone else’s “gritty” storyline.

The beat’em up combat has been replaced with turn-based RPG style battles for the first time in the series, and in doing so allows the characters to go even more over the top with their combat options. You’re also given all of the tender moments, the ridiculous laughs, and the hard boiled seriousness of the Yakuza series, but presented in a fresh new package through the eyes of a new protagonist. While the game doesn’t do anything NEW in terms of gameplay, the things it does are done with an extraordinary amount of love and polish.

I’d like to nominate Myst for most anticipated game. No, that’s not a typo. And you could easily argue against its inclusion on the basis of it being a 2020 remake of a 2000 remake of a game that released in 1993. And I’d be very excited to have that argument with you. I’d easily spend an hour explaining to you about how Myst has always been presented as a fictionalized version of real events, and how there are hints in the latest trailer and screenshots that seem to indicate that this will be a much more accurate telling of what actually happened back in thhe 1800s. I’d be so delighted to tell you about how this was the game that finally got me to bite the bullet on a VR setup, so I could revisit those strange worlds in the highest fidelity possible. And I fully accept that it would sound like the ravings of a mad man.

Let me tell you about Myst.

A lot of us on the site are also music nerds so here’s the category for that. You could also nominate a game for good sound effects work too! Perhaps its a horror game where you have to listen for the monsters, or maybe the menus just sound super nice.

I also have a nomination for most anticipated game, that being Breath of the Wild 2. It’s certainly mysterious, a sequel to quite possibly the best Zelda game, and Age of Calamity has demonstrated even further the potential of this incarnation of Hyrule. It was supposedly going to release this year, but I don’t think that’s still the case.

Tonight was the Game Awards! In celebration, here’s a freebie Category.

Legacy 30 – Game of the Year 1990

1990 is an interesting year in Video Game history. We were at the precipice of the 16-bit era, and while Sega had already released the Genesis, they still hadn’t quite found their footing. Meanwhile, the NES was still going strong, but it was apparent that it was entering its twilight years, with its successor being shown off at trade shows and the like, with it getting its Japanese release in November. While big things were going to happen in 1991 for both companies, 1990 still had a lot going for it.

Also, to help you guys out, here’s a sampling of games that came out this year that you might want to nominate (keep in mind they may be applicable for a category that hasn’t been unlocked yet):

Super Mario World technically was released on 21 November 1990 in Japan but I’m guessing this is for NA games only.

As for America, I nominate Super Mario Bros. 3. Released on February 12th, 1990 as Lincoln’s birthday gift. Strangely this game took nearly two years to travel to Americas, must have took the Mayflower route. It was also advertised in the last few scenes of The Wizard, a 90 minute Nintendo Commercial, released in theaters around Holiday times 1989.

        Weirdly enough, I’m a pomegranate.

Ah, but that was 1994. One game that did release in 1990 that was very influential (though not nearly as much as its predecessor) was Dragon Quest 4. It had a fairly complex and certainly memorable story, and was just all around fun. As such, that is my nomination for GotY 90.

If by “soon”, you mean in 2023, then yeah. I only do Legacy Awards for decade anniversaries, sorry. Otherwise it wouldn’t be fair to all the games that aren’t Super Mario Bros. 2.

I’m never sure what to do about Japan vs. Western release dates for Legacy Awards. I try to stick to the Western dates if possible, but I keep letting it slide for a few popular games for some strange reason.

EDIT: I just checked and SMB3 won Legacy 30 in 2018 from this exact loophole. This is awkward.

        Accepted Nominations

        • Super Mario Bros. 3 for Legacy 30
        • Dragon Quest 4 for Legacy 30 (As “Dragon Warrior IV”)

        New Category:

        Best Port, Remake, or Remaster

This category should help people with their problem of not playing new games this year. Did you play, perhaps, an old game made new again? Or maybe you just really like that old game and are glad that it’s getting a new audience.

I’ll let you guys in on a secret: you technically don’t have to have played the games you nominate! There just needs to be a good reason you think it deserves it.

Well Cyberpunk came out in December so you won’t be able to nominate it for Biggest Disappointment until next year. I had a feeling things were going to be awkward once somebody nominated it for Most Anticipated a week or so before it actually came out, but them’s the rules!

The writing’s on the wall. I’m gonna have to fill these in.

          • Added to the Presentation section: Story – Best Narrative and Systems – Best Game Design
          • Added to the Aspects of the Industry section: Best Indie Game
          • Added to the Looking Back, Looking Ahead section: Nicest Surprise, Biggest Disappointment, Best Gaming Moment, and Most Notable Media Event
            • (some clarification: Nicest Surprise and Biggest Disappointment are for games specifically. If it’s not a game, nominate it for Gaming Moment or Most Notable Media Event instead. TheName’sAndounuts somehow has a nomination there already!)
          • Added to the Legacy Awards section: Legacy 10 – Game of the Year 2010 and Legacy 20 – Game of the Year 2000

If you guys can somehow get at least two nominations in every category we’ll unlock our stretch category group: Around the Site.

If you can’t, don’t worry. I’m going to take it upon myself to fill in the blanks! Happy Holidays, and see you in January for the voting period!

Yes, you do. That’s the rules.

What’s “obvious” to you may also be obvious to others on this site (we do have a lot of shared experience and culture) but it’s not universal. Never assume your experiences are universal.

Also, I want to make sure some effort is put into this (however small) and you don’t just go “undertale good send tweet” for everything.

A specific example of yours is that RDR is worthy of GoTY 2010. Is it though? Super Mario Galaxy 2 also came out in 2010. So did Mass Effect 2 and Halo: Reach. I want you to defend your position. Even if you just copy and paste “Red Dead Redemption is one of the best open-world games of all time” or something like that.

              Game of the year 2010
Xenoblade Chronicles (Bear in mind my experience of the game comes from the wii u virtual console version.)
And man, have I got a chain attack of reasons why. As a matter of fact…
              Reyn! You’re up!

“Okay, so what you’ve got here is a wonderfully gripping action RPG. The large regions of Bionis and Mechonis make for some countless hours of exploration and discovery that I have yet to see challenged by any other title I’ve beat to date; they are and amazing showcase of what this funny little console with an oblong controller can do. And all are so memorable. Ask me how to get from colony 9 to colony 6 on foot, I DARE YOU!”
              “Dunban! Your turn!”

“And then comes the sound track, a metal-orchestral mashup that never misses a beat and always knows just how best to convey the emotions that the player needs to feel at any one point in time. Take the following example, the theme for fighting a unique monster: You Will Know Our Names.”

“I can scarcely get this song out of my head…”
              “Riki! Don’t mess up!”

“OOOOOH! Riki reeeeally love the story! Full of brilliant twists and turns, the tale of the greatest heropon is worth every hour you put into it. As for Sulk and friends, Riki love them too! Very good soild characterization, Riki may add. The heart to heart system gives each friend a chance to develop and become more engaging, and it delivers what it promises. Makes Riki care about friends, too, which Riki doesn’t experience from many other games. Xenoblade’s attention to how it’s story is presented makes Riki happy, HAPPY HAAAAAPY!”

(Yikes! I wrote more for that that I thought would be necessary. I guess it goes to show what an impression has left on me if I’m that hell bent on writing my reasons for nominating in the main characters’ vernacular. And that’s why Xenoblade is my game of the year 2010.)

That’s right! The only categories you can nominate games from outside this year (“year” in this case being December 2019 to November 2020) are the Legacy Awards and the 2019 Consolation Prize.

Ah, that’s good to know. Also, Pokémon Black/White was released in Japan in 2010, but 2011 elsewhere. If that works as a GotY 2010 nomination, I’ll edit this post to give my reasons and a proper nomination (though Super Mario Galaxy 2 would be close competition.)

Pokémon Black/White has, at least in my opinion, still the best story of any Pokémon game to date. Team PETA- er, Plasma was one of the more interesting villain teams in the series, Bianca and Cheren were great rivals, N’s story was engaging, and the story of Reshiram and Zekrom, while not exactly the newest, most original thing out there, was done well and was certainly a nice departure from the series of “created Earth/Life/The Universe/Everything” Pokémon” that had been seen in the preceding games.

The Pokémon designs were unique and fun, the music was delightful, and the Gym Leaders felt like their own characters and actually did something. All that is without even mentioning the post-game! The Battle Subway, fighting Cynthia, the extra rival battles, hunting down the Seven Sages, and all the other post-game content is like the icing on this spectacular cake. Sorry for the rant, I just… really love this game, and not just because it was the first Pokémon game I played. Although I admit having been, like, 5 when I first played it couldn’t have hurt my opinion of it.

For Best Port, Remake, or Remaster, I will nominate Professor Layton and the Unwound Future HD for Mobile, which launched back in July this year.

I only got into the Layton series earlier this year, but quickly fell in love with it (much as I did with Mother a few years ago), with Unwound Future becoming one of my favourite games thanks to the gorgeous animated cutscenes, lovely soundtrack, and engaging characters and storyline – oh, and of course the fun if occasionally frustrating puzzles.

The HD remaster takes all that and updates the game with clean, crisp artwork (for example, here’s what sample dialogue looks like between the original and the HD remaster.) The improvement is especially noticeable with the cutscenes, which can now be seen in their full, detailed glory (again, original and remastered). As an artist, it’s wonderful to have such high-quality reference images!

Plus, releasing the game on mobile means that it can both introduce new fans to the series and make it more accessible for established fans (Unwound Future first launched as a DS title in 2010, and like the other Layton titles can be hard to find and expensive nowadays).

The release was even promoted with an art contest, which I suppose isn’t directly relevant for the puposes of this nomination, but was a really cool chance to see the love, dedication, and of course lovely art of fans from all over the world.

              Weirdly enough, I’m a pomegranate.

              Two things I might ask before Early Man starts on BBC 1;
Are we allowed to make multiple nominations for a category?
Are you allowed to nominate a game that was officially released in 2011, but for which fully playable commercial versions have existed for in 2010? I’m thinking of adding minecraft to make things interesting.

              1. Yes! You just can’t nominate the same game for more than one category in the same group. So Nominating Game A and Game B to Best Indie Game would be okay, but Nominating Game C to both Best Narrative and Best Soundtrack wouldn’t. However, Nominating Game D to Nicest Surprise and Best Port/Remake/Remaster is fine!
              2. I’m not going to take Minecraft this year. I’ve gotta draw the line somewhere, so we’ll go by the Java 1.0 release.

Okay. So that means I’ll go straight to my legacy 20 nominee.

Pokémon Stadium 2 (Jp)/ Pokémon Stadium (NA, PAL)

This game has an interesting history with me. While it fairly sure wasn’t my first exposure to the Pokémon franchise (that honor goes to Diamond) it was my first gen 1 game. My sibling and I somehow had an N64 at our house in the middle of the DS era and it’s library consisted of Snowball Kid, Golden Eye, Rayman 2, Jet Force Gemni, Banjo Kazooie and this.
As we didn’t own red nor blue we very often played in rental battles, but that didn’t diminish the experience one bit. Pokémon Stadium is a game that holds up very well for its age, the textures are crisp and the models aren’t so blocky they’d look more at home in Minecraft. Don’t believe me? See for yourself!

Same thing goes with the music. I can’t believe it’s not a live recording!

Do I also need to mention that this game’s combat engine? And how it was programed by the late Iwata single-handedly? This game is a technological marvel!
And did I mention the minigames? If the main game isn’t your jam, then maybe this collection of 4 player party games will be more your speed. These are incredibly addictive and the menu music for it is the most catchy in the entire soundtrack.
(Also beating the game give you the dotrio gameboy tower which makes the original games run like the clappers and really speed up grinding.)

So BlueDrago, was that a super-effective arugement?
