Should I play the other Final Fantasys before 9? « Beyond EarthBound « Forum

Played 7, almost done with 8, but heard 9 had a lot of references and throwbacks to the older titles. So I was wondering, do I need to play those to fully enjoy 9? If so which ones should I all play?

All of the Final Fantasy games stand on their own (with the exception of the direct sequels, like X-2, or VIII-2 /3), so no, you don’t need to play older games to fully enjoy 9. There are a lot of references, yes, but it’s not like any of them are plot dependent or anything. It’s more just like “oh this item has a similar name to an item from an older game!”

That being said, if you’re asking if you should play older Final Fantasy games, sure, why not. I personally recommend people play 4, 6, and 7 since I think those are the best of the series, but really they’re all pretty good in their own ways.

Of course, everyone will have differing opinions on this.

If you were to ask me my personal favorite, I’d say Tactics, but that is so different from a traditional RPG it’s probably not what you’re looking for.

it really doesn’t have any direct references so you’re not missing anything if you don’t. the “throwback” is that IX isn’t done like VII and VIII and goes back to the fantasy setting earlier games were done in.
