Why hello gamers!

Making a thread on one of my favorite games…

Originally released in 2016, Overwatch is an ability-based first person shooter developed by Blizzard. It was incredibly popular from 2016-2018 before it kind of died off with a lack of Blizzard support, but was brought back under the spotlight in 2022 when the game rebranded as Overwatch 2.

Here’s how the game works: two teams of 5 fight to take control of the map objective and win based on that (capturing and defending a point until it reaches 100%; escorting or defending a payload until it reaches the other side of the map).

What really makes this game shine are the characters. Heroes are divided into Tank, Damage, and Support, and they all play different from each other. Tanks are meant to create space for the team, Damage characters are meant to, well, be the main source of damage, and Supports heal and enable their teammates to make plays.

You can play the typical Call of Duty character, or be a HAMSTER IN A BALL where, in addition to shooting, you also roll around like Super Monkey Ball. All of the heroes have unique play styles that sometimes make you forget you’re even playing an FPS; it’s as if League of Legends was an FPS.

For those of you who have never played Overwatch or haven’t played it in years, here is the current character roster:

What’s different about Overwatch 2?

Well… not much. The original Overwatch started receiving a lot less updates in 2019 because Blizzard announced Overwatch 2, which would include a PVE story mode including skill trees and the like. Pandemic shenanigans and bad executive additions led to Overwatch 2 NOT including PVE, so the game ended up suffering from a lack of updates for no reason.

Overwatch 2 transitioned the game from 6v6 to 5v5, and instead of lootboxes there’s now a microtransaction store…

But the game still feels fun for the most part, and in about two weeks the next update comes out where they’re changing a lot about the characters. The game is now in an overall healthy state and is receiving frequent updates with new characters on the horizon.

Anyone else play this game? Let me know! In the meantime, here is gameplay of the Hamster (p.s. I’m a Tracer main if anyone was wondering):

Overwatch was one of the few games I was actually pretty good at! Especially for a multiplayer. One of my IRL friend groups were really big into it and I think still are. Particularly one friend, who’s so big into the game that he’s bought the game for two of us, myself included, an Xbox to play it with him, haha. And the game, too, for one of us, before it was free.

I used to play it a lot during its early years. (As well as its less than one sided rival, Battleborn, with that very same friend. We both miss that game so much and it didn’t deserve the death it got. Wasn’t even comparable to Overwatch, IMO, aside from a large hero roster. But I digress. The friends never stopped playing, but I mostly have.

I nearly exclusively main D.va. Only character I have cute/pixel sprays for and golden guns. I’ll play Lucio if I need to, or if (back in the day) everyone on the team refused to play healer in favour of --ing off for kills as McCree (or whatever his name is now. I’m glad he was renamed but I can’t remember his new name lol) And I’ve had some good fun as Junkrat, and also Sombre, although I’m terrible as her. At least back in the day.

If I play, I’m on Xbox One. Although I do have it on Switch as well, with a useless empty case, buy that’s a story for my next post haha.

edit: Out of curiosity, which system do you play on?

Gotta be honest, I hate overwatch 2. it feels like someone got tf2, and sucked all of the silly billy aspects, all the goofs, simplicity, character design, and just injected it with crap to apeal to masses. all of the characters kinda blend together and their “class” is more of a suggestion. when a support is a better dps, than a dps, than that’s a problem. they had a decent concept, but they keep “modernizing” to make more money and appeal to the game industry, and it sorta makes it feel flat. especially with the really creepy community it has falling it. But hey, its not Apex :shiver:

As much as I hate overwatch, I do admit it has some better aspects than tf2. Reinhard is my favorite hero, and is a consept I wish was in TF2. As much as it wouldn’t work, Heavy with a massive hammer is so awsome. Also, a lot of the characters are cool, like said rienhard, Junkrat, winston, wrekingball, and widow maker. all of them stand out from the cast and can be recognisable. their aspects resemble how they play, and they feel polished. Sadly, the rest of the classes look to… human? They just kinda… exist, and nothing motivates me as a player to try them out, which is sad, because of how unique a lot of their consepts are. Like doomfist and hanzo have almost the same character art, and nothing about either sticks out as unique. Idk, just some thoughts.

Ciao for now!

I play on the Xbox Series S!

This is a fair take. More recently, Overwatch has been adding new heroes that are simpler to use and in general taking the uniqueness it once had and bringing it more in line with other popular FPS games. This is likely because the game is free to play now and they want to draw in more people who would otherwise be normally put off by this type of game. Not saying I agree with it, but that’s the way I see it.

As someone who plays the game competitively a lot, I do have a different perspective on the uniqueness of the heroes. I think you’re looking at it from more of a visual standpoint which is valid, but as far as abilities go, I think they’re incredibly unique and contain aspects not really seen often in FPS games.

Take Tracer for example. On paper, she’s simple: three dashes and a button that lets you reset. She also has the lowest health in the game and dies easily if you make one mistake, so actually pulling her off to the fullest potential is what makes her difficult.

Characters like her are what make me love this game. You go behind the enemy team and pressure them. They look at you instead of your team, use abilities on you instead of your team, etc.

I’ll agree with your overall assessment that the game can be stinky and I 100% understand why people feel that way. It has become pretty uninspired in many ways compared to the original concept which held so much potential. I still find it to be one of the best shooters on the market when it works, but when it doesn’t work, the game feels awful for everyone.
