#2. Oh my god, please #2.

We definitely like the idea of a translation-related shirt, no idea if/how/when we’ll pull it off, though. I’d really love to see any other ideas you (and everyone else) can come up with, though. Perhaps we’ll make it a simple ‘thumbs up’ voting system — if you think a design would go well on a shirt, give it a thumbs up.

One design per post!

I’ve pulled out Mitch’s second design and reposted it here so that people can vote on it separately:

Someone wearing Nut Bread on their head might be cool too. Though that sounds like it’d make a cool button though. “Nut Bread is not for the head”

“Welcome to th:|” Would be my favorite shirt for eternity.

A simple idea but what about a shirt saying:

MOTHER 3
Bring it to
America

And on the back it says it in Japanese

most of these are inside joke that I barely get and I usually keep on par with the project. I would try to focus on something with the idea of translating a Japanese game or something that is just ridiculous about a Mother 3 name or character that is troublesome in the translating process. I would want it to be something that people can get without having to be in the “know” to get it.

Also, I forgot to mention, but people’ve been asking for a shirt or something like this for over a year now (maybe starting with that sparrow), but I’ve always said “maybe later, when the project is done”. The blog readers keep mentioning it, so this would be for them. If you (Jonk) want to do a more generic thing for the translation, that’s fine, but this is more like a gift thing for the loyal readers.

In fact, I don’t really even intend to profit from it, so if I put it on CP I’d put a 0 markup (unless mitch wants some money for his work). I realize that’s not what Fangamer can do, plus you can’t print stuff on demand, so I think our goals may differ here. So if you’d prefer a more generic thing to add to your stuff, that’s fine. But I think what mitch made the topic for is more directed for the blog people.

Well, to be fair, you kinda have to be in the know to get what the I (..) NP shirt means. The "welcome to th:|" isn’t too generic, as I’m positive it can be summarized in a single sentence and a picture of the screenshot. I think that line is the perfect representation of the M3FT, to boot.

I know you don’t like that design, but a bunch of people got it and like it. This isn’t a discussion about that design so its not relevant here so brining that up is unnecessary and is not a correct comparison.

As for the design, Tomato, if you think it can sell at least 100 shirts, then go for it. Let me explain why:

I am just thinking of overall sales for the design and don’t want to put anyone in the hole for it but want to get the profits to those that can if we can do it. I know this is for the those on the blog, so you would want a design that not only touches on that one joke, but in the way it is presented or designed, it offers something else that is blog themed and more than a passing fancy. I am trying to think of the value the shirt would have in more of a long term reflection. I want to have a translation related shirt, but I would like for it to have some sense of hilarity that could stand on its own in some fashion if possible.

Welcome to the works, it is just how it is presented and designed that may add a sense of hilarity beyond just the blog translation joke. Maybe a play on DIY (we have to be cafeul with the MOTHER DIY sample, its sounds like it could be read as a MILF shirt) but some play on the DIY aspect of the entire blog itself. Whatever the case, think of the potential long term value. If you are going to make a shirt, any potential it can have can be something that can go into it to make it worth while for the blog and the people buying the shirt.

Jonk, don’t get me wrong here – I don’t hate the NP shirt design at all I think it’s rather elegant. I didn’t feel that the design at the time was very appropriate for a shirt, is all. But regardless, the entire demographic of these shirts are obviously in some sort of niche where you gotta be in the in-crowd that played the games to understand the imagery in the first place. The style of shirts I’ve seen so far have thusfar dealt with subtle imagery vs. big black text that says “I ENJOY EARTHBOUND THE VIDEO GAME,” which is great. I’m not bringing it up to bash on you at all.

I personally think it’s pretty appropriate to consider Mother 3 and the translation project itself to both be niches with their own imagery and inside jokes, and I feel as if some of the more well-known M3FT blog jokes would require a similar level of indoctrination needed to understand the jokes. But, it seems silly to get too deep into this.

i have my own personal opinions on what would work best on a shirt to represent the translation project but obviously if i’m not throwing money down for it it’s not too much of my opinion. I am, however, completely up for re-drawing anything you guys think would be good. I’m just a cartoonist, not a designer.

also i agree the boob wizards II thing was a complete lark and i can’t believe people laughed at it to begin with. i just couldn’t think of anything funny so i wrote that inste

People kept asking “is it going to be earthbound 2 instead of mother 3” over and over, so mitch randomly said something like “cmon it’s obvious they’re going to choose the best name of all, boob wizards 2” because it had gotten annoying. It was funny and stuff, and was an in-joke for a while, before getting lost to time.

I think Boob Wizard pins sold on demand would be cool myself, but I don’t know if Cafepress does them.

I can tell by the subtle hints that cafepress will be the solution. I honestly would like to work with this, but I don’t feel that is wanted.

Here’s what I’d prefer actually: mitch and I’ll do something for the bloggy people (most likely after the patch is out, I dunno yet) on cafepress, nothing fancy, just stuff they’ve been asking for for a while. I definitely CAN’T assure you there’d be at least 100 orders of them anyway (I’d guess just in the couple dozen), so it wouldn’t work for Fangamer anyway.

But it would be cool if after the patch is out there’s something done by Fangamer in celebration of the project’s completion. That’d be general enough (and not based on an inside joke) that you could probably definitely get the # you’re looking for.

I was thinking of a conveyor belt full of Japanese text… leading to a big machine with a little Tomato stuck in it (like Krang) with awesome English words popping out the back end.

Those are shirt ideas solely about MOTHER 3 (which isnt a bad thing) but this is a topic about shirt pertaining to the MOTHER 3 translation.

Sparrow of Death

Frickin’ thing kept the first draft at 99.99% and it took forever to find the last bit of untranslated text.

Heh. To lighten the mood, here’s a silly anecdote from the other day. I was FINALLY just about done with the first draft translation script! So excited! Finally, I finished the very last line in the game, yay! All done! So I hit the Stats button to finally get to see that satisfying “100” on my screen… but it said 99.99 instead! Aaaaaaaaaaah! Apparently I had skipped a single line at some point, and trying to find it in a 2.5 meg text file… yeah it wasn’t fun. Eventually I just wrote a program to find it for me.

What was the line?

“Chirp chirp chirp.”
